A Message from the MACC Membership Committee

Currently the Chamber has 75 members, of which 1/3rd are enjoying the second year of their two-year discounted membership, 44 are renewing members and six are brand new to our Chamber!  All of these members have joined in their preferred category as a business, individual/family or non-profit entity.  Although we encourage joining before April 15th, we continue to receive applications and many are also responding with support for Country Days and the Hot Air Balloon Festival.  If you have not yet submitted your application for membership please do so; we are hoping to exceed our roster of 118 members last year, and no one will be turned away!  ~Carole Porretta, Membership Chairperson

Children Helping Seniors

The staff at Metacare Inc. would like to thank all the local businesses that supported Metacare Inc.'s charity event on May 6 themed around children helping seniors!  The Talent Contest was open to children within the community between the ages of 2-16.  This contest gave local children a chance to showcase their talents in front of their families as well as bring joy to the residents at Metacare Inc.  Three of the residents were thrilled to portray their role as "judges."  Talents ranged from singing and piano playing to a very young musician!  The top 3 winners received gift certificates from the Historic White Horse Inn.

However, ALL participants were winners and left with a goodie bag of items provided by our sponsors - Celebration of the Horse, Community Insurance Center, Historic White Horse Inn, Ice Mountain Figure Skating Club, Lapeer District Library – Metamora Branch, Metamora Chamber of Commerce, Pistachio’s Deli & Scoops, PNC Bank, Spinal Solutions Chiropractic & Wellness Center, The Village Taxidermist.

The cost to participate was a new or slightly used stuffed animal for "Stuffed Animals for Emergencies" organization. This organization is dedicated to helping children within our own communities who could use the comfort during traumatic and emotional situations.  It is a free way that communities can work together to help others as well as helping our planet by recycling stuffed animals that are in wonderful condition and shouldn't be thrown away.  "All donations received go directly to children in need...your items are never sold!"

If you were unable to attend the charity event but interested in taking part, you are welcome to drop off a stuffed animal to the facility during the week of May 6th between the hours of 9:00am-4:00pm.

got bees?

The Marguerite deAngeli Branch of the Lapeer District Library does!  The library will be offering a free presentation on Backyard Beekeeping on Monday, May 21, 2012 from 6:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. There are an estimated 200,000 beekeepers in the United States; most are hobbyists with less than 25 hives. Beekeepers tend to enjoy animals, plants and be curious about nature and living organisms in general. The benefit of harvesting fresh honey from your own hive makes beekeeping a rewarding hobby.

Richard Leonard from the Michigan Beekeepers Association has been keeping bees for over 35 years. He began his first beehive as a swarm at age 15, shortly after he started working for a local beekeeper. He currently keeps over 30 hives in the Lapeer area. Mr. Leonard will be sharing his expertise on beginning backyard beekeeping with attendees.

To register for this informational program please call (810) 664-6971. For more information about this or other upcoming library events please visit www.library.lapeer.org.
